ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of milking hygiene practices, herd size, water hardness, and temperature-humidity index (THI) on the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of raw milk, and standard plate count (SPC) in milking machines of dairy farms in the central region of Mexico. Data were collected from fifty-three dairy farms during one year. The evaluated effects included milking hygiene conditions (good, medium, poor), herd size (1-50, 51-100, 101-150, ≥151 heads), water hardness (soft or moderately hard), and THI (comfortable or stressful). The increase in milking hygiene produced greater milk yield (MY) and energy corrected milk (ECM) but lower protein content, and decreased the individual bacterial count (IBC) and somatic cell count (SCC). The MY, ECM, protein content, IBC, and SCC were higher on bigger farms. The use of soft water reduced MY, IBC, and SCC, but improved fat, lactose, total solids (TS), and non-fat solids (NFS). Heat stress negatively affected fat, protein, TS, NFS, acidity, freezing point (FP), SCC, and methylene blue dye reduction test. Poor milking hygiene contributes to higher SPC in milking machine parts. Water hardness and THI did not affect SPC in all milking machine parts. Proper milking hygiene practices, larger herd size, softer water, lower THI, and adequate cleaning and disinfection of the milking machine parts benefits the physicochemical and microbiological quality of the milk.

Resumen El objetivo fue evaluar el comportamiento higiénico (CH) de abejas melíferas (Apis mellifera) africanizadas y su impacto en la resistencia a la ascosferosis causada por Ascosphaera apis. Se evaluó el CH y la población de abejas adultas y de cría de 50 colonias. Además, colonias con alto (>95 %) y bajo (<50 %) CH fueron inoculadas con A. apis y en ellas se determinó el número de crías con signos de ascosferosis (momias) durante 17 días, datos que se correlacionaron con su grado de CH. También se evaluó la susceptibilidad a A. apis de larvas de colonias con alto y bajo CH en un medio ambiente común, para separar efectos ambientales de genotípicos. El grado de CH entre colonias varió significativamente (CV>36 %), con 20 % de las colonias mostrando alto CH ((95 %) y éste no se correlacionó con la población de abejas adultas y cría. Las colonias con alto CH tuvieron un número significativamente menor de momias que las colonias con bajo CH y hubo una correlación negativa entre el CH y el número de momias (r= -0.63, P= 0.02). Además, las larvas de colonias con alto o bajo CH fueron igualmente susceptibles al hongo. Estos resultados sugieren que el CH y la susceptibilidad de las larvas no están asociados y que el principal mecanismo de protección contra A. apis en poblaciones de abejas africanizadas es el CH. Por ello, la selección de colonias con alto comportamiento higiénico podría contribuir a mejorar la salud y productividad de las abejas melíferas.

Abstract The objective was to evaluate the hygienic behavior (HB) of Africanized honeybees (Apis mellifera) and its impact on resistance to ascospherosis caused by Ascosphaera apis. The HB and the population of adult bees and brood of 50 colonies were evaluated. In addition, colonies with high (>95 %) and low (<50 %) HB were inoculated with A. apis and in them, the number of broods with signs of ascospherosis (mummies) was determined for 17 days, data that correlated with their degree of HB. The susceptibility to A. apis of larvae from colonies with high and low HB in a common environment was also evaluated to separate environmental from genotypic effects. The degree of HB between colonies varied significantly (CV>36 %), with 20 % of the colonies showing high HB (≥95 %) and this did not correlate with the population of adult bees and brood. Colonies with high HB had significantly fewer mummies than colonies with low HB and there was a negative correlation between HB and number of mummies (r= -0.63, P= 0.02). In addition, larvae from colonies with high or low HB were equally susceptible to the fungus. These results suggest that HB and larval susceptibility are not associated and that the main protection mechanism against A. apis in Africanized bee populations is HB. Therefore, the selection of colonies with high hygienic behavior could contribute to improving the health and productivity of honeybees.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the number of adult bees, brood areas, honey and pollen from 150 honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies in spring and fall in the temperate semidry, temperate sub-humid and semi-warm semi-dry regions of Zacatecas, Mexico. The colonies in the semi-warm semi-dry region had significantly more bees and brood in the fall than those in the other regions (P=0.001). In the spring, colony populations in the temperate semi-dry and semi-warm semi-dry regions were similar and significantly greater than those in the temperate sub-humid region (P<0.01). There was significantly less honey and more pollen stored in the fall, in hives of the semi-warm semi-dry region than in hives of the other regions (P=0.001). In the spring, the area of stored pollen in colonies of the temperate semidry region was significantly greater than that of colonies from the other regions (P<0.0001). The population of adult bees and brood areas of colonies in the fall correlated positively with bee population, brood and honey areas in the spring (P<0.001). In the fall, the semi-warm semi-dry region had better conditions for developing and reproducing colonies than the other regions. However, the population sizes of the colonies studied (21,000 to 35,000 bees/hive) are not considered optimal (>50,000), and thus, it is suggested that previous to blossom seasons, strategies aimed at increasing bee population and food stores, that contribute to winter colony survival and to improve their productivity, are implemented.

Resumen: Se estimó la población de abejas, áreas con cría, miel y polen en 150 colonias de abejas melíferas (Apis mellifera) establecidas en las regiones semiseca templada, subhúmeda templada y semiseca semicálida de Zacatecas, México, durante las épocas de primavera y otoño. Las colonias de la región semiseca semicálida tuvieron significativamente más abejas y cría en otoño que las colonias de las otras regiones (P(0.001). En primavera, la población de abejas en las colonias de las regiones semiseca templada y semiseca semicálida fue similar, y significativamente mayor que en la región subhúmeda templada (P(0.01). Se registró menos miel y más polen almacenados en otoño en colonias de la región semiseca semicálida que en las otras regiones (P(0.001). En primavera, el área de polen almacenado en colonias de la región semiseca templada fue significativamente mayor que en las otras regiones (P<0.0001). La población de abejas y áreas de cría de las colonias en otoño, se correlacionaron positivamente con la población de abejas, áreas de cría y miel de la primavera (P<0.001). En otoño, la región semiseca semicálida tuvo mejores condiciones para el desarrollo y reproducción de colonias que las otras regiones. Sin embargo, el tamaño poblacional de las colonias estudiadas (21,000 a 35,000 abejas/colmena) no es considerado óptimo ((50,000), por lo que se sugiere que previo a floraciones se implementen estrategias tendientes a incrementar la población y reservas de alimento que contribuyan a la sobrevivencia de las colonias en el invierno y a mejorar su productividad.

ABSTRACT: The objective was to estimate the rate of loss of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies during the winter of 2015-2016 in the altiplano and northern regions of Mexico. In total, 196 beekeepers (n= 41 907 colonies) were surveyed. The average rate of colony loss in both regions was 33.4%, with no significant differences (p > 0.05) between regions. Beekeepers surveyed estimate that the main causes of loss were: bad weather, diseases, insecticides, evasion and swarming. The size of apicultural farms had no effect on the rate of colony loss. This study represents the first estimate in two regions of Mexico of the rate of colony loss in the winter period, which is similar to that of other countries. It is suggested to implement management techniques that would help mitigate the effects of bad weather, diseases, pests and Africanization.

RESUMEN: El objetivo fue estimar la tasa de pérdida de colonias de abejas melíferas (Apis mellifera) durante el invierno de 2015-2016 en las regiones del altiplano y norte de México. Se encuestaron 196 apicultores (n = 41 907 colonias). La tasa promedio de pérdida de colonias en ambas regiones fue del 33.4%, no se presentaron diferencias significativas (p > 0.05) entre regiones. Los apicultores encuestados estiman que las principales causas de pérdida fueron: el mal tiempo, enfermedades, insecticidas, evasión y la enjambrazón. No hubo efecto del tamaño de las explotaciones apícolas respecto a la tasa de pérdida de colonias. El presente estudio representa la primer estimación en dos regiones de México sobre la tasa de pérdida de colonias en el periodo invernal y que ésta es similar a la de otros países. Se sugiere implementar técnicas de manejo que contribuyan a mitigar los efectos del mal clima, las enfermedades, plagas y la africanización.

The aim of this study was to compare the honey yields and levels of Varroa destructor between colonies of Africanized honey bees (AHB) (Apis mellifera) showing high and low hygienic behavior (HB) in Mexico's semi-arid high plateau. The degree of HB of 57 colonies was measured using the liquid nitrogen (N2) brood-freezing technique. The colonies were categorized into two groups: high HB (> 95 %) and low HB (< 50 % removal of freeze-killed brood at 48 h). Honey production was evaluated in fall and spring and the level of Varroa on adult bees was determined before and during the honey harvests. The colonies with high HB produced significantly more honey than the colonies with low HB only during the spring crop (21.4 ± 4.7 vs 13.4 ± 5.0 kg; P<0.01). There were no significant differences between the two groups of colonies for levels of infestation by V. destructor (P>0.05). These results suggest that apparently HB does not have a major role in restraining the growth of Varroa populations in AHB. They also suggest that high levels of HB could contribute to increase honey production in AHB colonies during times of the year with limited nectar flow.

El objetivo del estudio fue comparar la producción de miel y los niveles de Varroa destructor entre colonias de abejas africanizadas (AA) (Apis mellifera) con alto y bajo comportamiento higiénico (CH) en el altiplano semiárido de México. Se midió el nivel de CH a 57 colonias por congelamiento de la cría con nitrógeno líquido (N2). Las colonias se clasificaron en dos grupos: alto CH (> 95 %) y bajo CH (< 50 % de remoción de la cría muerta por congelamiento en 48 h). La producción de miel se evaluó durante el otoño y la primavera y el nivel de infestación por Varroa en abejas adultas se determinó antes y durante las cosechas de miel. En primavera, las colonias con CH alto produjeron significativamente más miel que las de CH bajo (21.4 ± 4.7 vs 13.4 ± 5.0 kg; P<0.01). No hubo diferencias entre los dos grupos de colonias para los niveles de Varroa (P>0.05). Estos resultados sugieren que aparentemente el comportamiento higiénico no tiene un efecto mayor en la resistencia de las AA al crecimiento poblacional del ácaro. También sugieren que el comportamiento higiénico alto podría contribuir a incrementar la producción de miel en épocas del año con flujo reducido de néctar.

The aim of this study was to determine if the mite Varroa destructor affects honey yields of honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies in Mexico's semiarid high plateau. A total of 32 colonies with different degrees of mite infestation that had not been treated with miticides in the previous two years were used. Honey yields and mite infestation levels in adult bees were recorded and data were subjected to correlation analyses. A negative and significant correlation was found between V. destructor infestation level and honey yield (r= -0.44, P=0.01); and average infestation and honey yield values (±SD) were 15.21 ±8.44 % and 36.26±29.24 kg, respectively. Results indicate that when V. destructor infestation levels increase, honey yield drops significantly. Therefore it is recommended that colonies infested with V. destructor be subjected to control methods that reduce mite populations to favor an increase in honey yields.

El propósito del presente trabajo fue determinar sí el ácaro Varroa destructor afecta la producción de miel en colonias de abejas melíferas (Apis mellifera) del altiplano semiárido de México. Se utilizaron 32 colonias que variaban en sus niveles de infestación del ácaro y que no habían recibido ningún acaricida durante dos años. Se determinó la producción de miel y el nivel de parasitosis en abejas adultas de estas colonias y los datos se sometieron a un análisis de correlación. Se encontró una correlación negativa y significativa entre el nivel de infestación por Varroa y la producción de miel (r= -0.44, P=0.01). Los valores medios de infestación y producción de miel (±DE) fueron 15.21 ± 8.44 % y 36.26 ± 29.24 kg, respectivamente. Los resultados indican que al incrementarse el nivel de varroosis, la producción de miel se reduce de manera significativa. Se recomienda que las colonias de abejas infestadas por Varroa destructor sean sometidas a métodos de control que reduzcan la población del ácaro para contribuir a incrementar la producción de miel.
